DOES ONE-IN-SEVEN MEAN THE SAME THING AS 'THE SEVENTH'?

DR. JOHN MORRIS,
INSTITUTE FOR CREATION, DALLAS, TEXAS

DEAR DR. MORRIS:

THIS MORNING I RECEIVED YOUR SERMONETTE ON THE "SABBATH."

IN OTHER OF YOUR ARTICLES, YOU AND YOUR FATHER POINT OUT THAT GOD CREATED ALL THINGS IN SIX DAYS AND RESTED THE SEVENTH. HOWEVER, IN THIS SERMONETTE, YOU CONCLUDE THAT "ONE IN SEVEN" IS THE SAME AS "THE SEVENTH."

GOD BLESSED AND SANCTIFIED THE SEVENTH DAY OF THE WEEK. GEN. 2:3: "GOD BLESSED THE SEVENTH DAY AND SANCTIFIED IT: BECAUSE THAT IN IT HE HAD RESTED FROM ALL HIS WORK WHICH GOD CREATED AND MADE."

GOD DID NOT BLESS AND SANCTIFY ANY OF THE OTHER SIX DAYS OF THE WEEK. HE BLESSED AND SANCTIFIED "IT," ONE DAY, THE SEVENTH. "IT" IS A SINGULAR PRONOUN REFERRING TO ONE DAY, AND ONE DAY ONLY-- THE SEVENTH DAY. ONLY GOD, NOT MAN, CAN SANCTIFY A DAY, FOR IT IS HE WHO CREATED THAT DAY OF REST. YES, GOD SANCTIFIED ONE DAY, THE SEVENTH DAY.

THE FOURTH COMMANDMENT OF EXODUS 20, CONFIRMS THE GENESIS ACCOUNT OF CREATION AND THE BLESSING OF "THE SEVENTH-DAY" AS A DAY TO "REMEMBER" GOD'S CREATION OF THE WORLD AND ALL THINGS IN IT.

DR. MORRIS, YOU ARE AN INTELLIGENT MAN. I RESPECT YOUR RESEARCH ON THE EARLY CHAPTERS OF GENESIS. SURELY YOU UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN "ONE DAY IN SEVEN" AND "THE SEVENTH DAY."

PLEASE ALLOW ME TO USE A SIMPLE EXAMPLE TO ILLUSTRATE THIS POINT: SUPPOSE I OWN SEVEN HOUSES ON SHADY GROVE STREET. I LIKE YOU AND TELL YOU THAT I WISH TO DO SOMETHING FOR YOU; THEREFORE, I SHALL GIVE YOU THE SEVENTH HOUSE. WE SIGN THE PAPERS GIVING YOU THE HOME, AND YOU THANK ME. NEXT WEEK YOU START MOVING FROM YOUR CURRENT ADDRESS INTO YOUR NEW HOME. HOWEVER, YOU SAY TO YOURSELF, "I LIKE THE FIRST HOUSE BETTER, SO I WILL JUST TAKE IT AND MOVE INTO IT." YOU REASON, "ONE IN SEVEN IS THE SAME AS THE SEVENTH."

WHEN I COME DOWN SHADY GROVE STREET LATER THAT DAY AND SEE YOU MOVING INTO MY FIRST HOUSE, I ASK YOU WHAT YOU ARE DOING. YOU TELL ME THAT YOU LIKE THE FIRST HOUSE BETTER AND THAT ONE IN SEVEN MEANS THE SAME THING AS "THE SEVENTH." THEREFORE, I TAKE YOU TO COURT FOR OCCUPYING UNLAWFULLY MY FIRST HOUSE, AND THE JUDGE RULES IN MY FAVOR, REJECTING THE LOGIC THAT "ONE IN SEVEN" MEANS THE SAME AS "THE SEVENTH."

DR. MORRIS, YOU HAVE A TREMENDOUS INFLUENCE IN THE RELIGIOUS WORLD, AND I AM DEEPLY SADDENED TO SEE YOU SELL YOURSELF SHORT BY TAKING SUCH A FOOLISH, HOLLOW POSITION, WHICH WEAKENS YOUR OTHER SCHOLARSHIP, AS WELL.

I INVITE YOU TO JOIN ME IN KEEPING GOD'S SEVENTH-DAY SABBATH.

MY WEBSITE IS: WWW.GUTHRIEMEMORIAL.ORG.

I LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR REPLY.

MAY GOD GUIDE AND BLESS YOU AS YOU PREPARE FOR ETERNITY.

YOUR BROTHER IN CHRIST,
